Becoming a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) pilot is rewarding and fulfilling. As a CAP pilot, you are given the opportunity to fly as a part of the world’s largest fleet of single engine aircraft. CAP’s fleet of aircraft primarily consists of C-172, C-182, C-205, GA-8, all of which your could get checked out in.
You will start initially as a VFR pilot, however, depending on experience you can quickly move to the positions of transportation pilot and mission pilot. You will also have the opportunity to work with and fly cadets as an orientation pilot.
"When you first join CAP, you will want to become a VFR pilot as soon as possible. To do this you will have to complete both flying and non-flying training. The flying tasks should be familiar but there are additional non-flying tasks required to ensure you are familiar with civil air patrol in its role as the auxiliary of the US Air Force. Although not in a military service, you need to always remember that you are a valued part of the “Total Force” and need to present yourself and care for the equipment provided as if you are in the Regular Air Force, Air National Guard, or Air Force Reserve. The unit should provide a mentor, if you don’t have one, to help you through the process. If the unit does not provide a mentor, ask your unit Director of Operations or Commander to provide you with a mentor. After completing the VFR pilot requirements, you will be able to move forward to meet your desired goals within the organization. Your mentor will be able to explain the advantages of gaining more qualifications." -CAP National HQ

Eligibility

Be a current, active CAP member at least 17 years of age

Possess a valid FAA private, commercial, or airline transport pilot certificate

Possess a valid FAA Class III or higher medical certificate (not required for gliders)

Possess a current flight review IAW FAR 61.56
